A $2 million water park opened at Crown Reef Resort in Myrtle Beach just in time for the July Fourth holiday, though a bit later in the summer than initially planned.

The sprawling water park, part of a massive overhaul of the resort under new ownership, features three slides that stand as high as 38 feet and a silly sub play area with water sprays and bucket dumps. Those additions join the pools, lazy river and Jacuzzis that already were there.

The water park was expected to open in May, but ran into some construction delays.

Crown Reef worked with Wild Water and Wheels to accommodate resort guests earlier this summer who had expected the resort’s water park to be open, said Matt Klugman, spokesman for Vacation Myrtle Beach Resorts, which includes Crown Reef.

Crown Reef Resort LLC bought the resort in August for $16.1 million and has invested about $7.5 million upgrading the guest rooms and adding amenities such as the water park, a Loco Gecko restaurant, coffee bar and arcade.

The Crown Reef debuted in Myrtle Beach in 1994.
