Newsmakers | Firefighter and police officer honored at Optimist Club meeting in North Myrtle Beach

The North Strand Optimist Club presented the North Myrtle Beach Firefighter and Officer Of the Year Awards for 2014 on June 25. The guest speaker was District 28 State Senator J. Gregory Hembree. Hembree reviewed his career in law enforcement as solicitor and had high praise for the North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Department.

Hembree introduced North Myrtle Beach Fire Chief Tom Barstow who presented the “Firefighter Of The Year” award to firefigher Craig Young, who was recommended for the award by Battalion Chief Todd Davis. Young is well respected by his peers and completed 272 classroom hour of training as well as 80 hours of hands-on rescue training.

Hembree then introduced North Myrtle Beach Police Chief Phil Webster, who presented the “Cal Leonard Officer Of The Year” award to Lance Corporal Ray Pollock. Webster indicated that Pollock had extreme drive and determination in achieving certification of specific skills instructor, child safety seat technician and status of traffic safety instructor. Outside of work, Pollock participates as Cub Master and volunteers his time to coach youth baseball for the city’s Recreation Department.
