Too far? PSA on gun safety features kids with sex toys

June 27, 2014

The need for a greater focus on gun safety is obvious. We live in a state, South Carolina, the Violence Policy Center says has the ninth worst rate of gun violence in a nation that has the worst rate in the industrialized world.

Is this public service announcement (at the link) going too far, with children playing with sex toys that were left unsecured by unaware adults, an obvious illusion to a situation that has ended in tragedy – even in our area – when kids find guns?

I haven’t decided how I feel about the PSA, but we should be more skittish about kids finding loaded guns than sex toys. Yet, like the way we treat movies, violent content doesn’t move us to “protect the little children” the way sex does.
