Fatal fire in Conway caused abandoned or discarded smoking materials

A fatal fire Saturday was determined to be unintentional and related to abandoned or discarded smoking materials, said Jeremy Carter, battallion chief with Conway Fire Department.

John Henry Smith, 77, died as a result of a fire that occurred at about 4:30 p.m. at his home at 1700 Hiland Ave. in Conway, according to Horry County Coroner Robert Edge.

The fire was under control by 5:30 p.m., and the cause of the fire is under investigation, said Selena Small, spokeswoman for Conway Police Department.

Horry County Fire Rescue and the Conway police department provided mutual aid during the fire.
