After a few failed attempts, Pete Politis with the Myrtle Beach Triathlon Club is bringing a race to The Market Common in September.
“Process of elimination,” Politis said of the group settling on the location. “It’s a smaller race ... but it allows for kids to participate. And for more spectators.”
Politis worked with the city to apply to bring a 140-mile Ironman Triathlon to Myrtle Beach last year, but the city lost the bid to Chattanooga, Tenn. The city’s Special Events Technical Review Committee requested Politis find a way to have a closed course for a proposed half-triathlon at the Marina at Grande Dunes, which Politis said was too difficult.
He said he expects 120 to 150 children ages five and older as well as adults, mostly local, to participate in the event this year and if all goes well he hopes to hold it annually.
According to the proposed route for the event on Sept. 28, racers would swim 250 yards, bike 6 miles and run 1.5 miles.
Politis said he still is working to bring a larger triathlon to the area.
“I’m not giving up,” he said.
