A man remains hospitalized after he was struck by a boat near Bird Island, according to authorities.

Horry County Fire Rescue officials used a boat crew to rescue the man and then he was flown by helicopter to an area hospital for treatment, according to firefighters.

Brett Witt, a spokesman for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, said DNR officials were notified that between 2 and 3 p.m. Sunday that a man was on a pontoon boat near Bird Island. Officers learned the water was smooth, so the man walked to the front of the boat, reached into a cooler but he lost his balance and fell overboard.

The man was struck by the propeller of the boat and suffered head and thigh injuries, Witt said. The man also swallowed a large amount of water during the incident. The man’s condition was not immediately available Tuesday morning.

DNR officials continue to investigate the incident and are not releasing the man’s identity until the investigation has been completed, Witt said.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
