The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating a highway fatality Monday that involved three vehicles and killed a Loris man.

Rudy Shelley, 37, was within about a mile of his home when he was killed, according to Horry County Coroner Robert Edge, who said Shelley was pronounced dead at the scene. He died from injuries to his head. Edge said Shelley was wearing a seatbelt.

The incident occurred about 1:15 p.m. on S.C. 45 near the intersection with S.C. 19.

Brian VanAernem, with Horry County Fire Rescue, said S.C. 45 was closed while the incident was being investigated.

Cpl. Sonny Collins with the S.C. Highway Patrol said a pickup truck was going south on S.C. 45 pulling a trailer that had a large metal object on it, but the piece of metal fell off the trailer and into the northbound lane where it was struck by another pickup truck.

The piece of metal was then propelled back into the southbound lane and struck Shelley's vehicle, which resulted in his death, Collins said.

The driver of the pickup truck that was hauling the piece of metal was cited with the charge of spilling a load, Collins said.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
