Gas leak reported in North Myrtle Beach, road closed

North Myrtle Beach authorities have closed at portion of Sixth Avenue South near Hillside Drive for a natural gas leak, according to an alert from the North Myrtle Beach Department of Public Safety.

Motorists in that area should avoid the area and find an alternative route.

A contractor working on storm water drainage Wednesday morning cut through a six inch gas main in the area of Sixth Avenue South and Hillside Drive, said Pat Dowling, city spokesman.

Sixth Avenue South is closed off from the Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, east to Ocean Boulevard, Dowling said. SCE&G is on scene and will either valve or crimp off the leak. It should take them another hour or so to accomplish the work.

No evacuations have been ordered, Dowling said.

More information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
