Letter | Independent audit might shed light on Whispering Pines woes

May 13, 2014

Built in 1962 by airmen on the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, families could join the nine-hole course for $5 a month. Whispering Pines added nine more holes in 1987. It's a public golf course owned and operated by the city of Myrtle Beach. On Thursday, April 24, 2014, golfers play the course located across Harrelson Boulevard from Myrtle Beach International Airport. The course is slated to be a topic of discussion at the city council's weekend budget retreat. Photo by Janet Blackmon Morgan /

Re: April 26 article, “Future foggy for city course”

If Myrtle Beach City Council can't find a way to make money on a golf course that was given to them at no cost by the United States Air Force maybe they should consider giving it to someone else to run to see if they can't do a better job.

Before they plow the course under for another underutilized soccer field or softball diamond the citizens should require an independent (not council picked) accounting firm to come in and audit the books to see if all of the "losses" ($250,000 per year for the last four years, per the article) are attributable directly to the golf course or the result of spreading losses among the various city departments through creative, but legal, accounting practices.

Possibly a collaboration between the teachers and students in Horry County high schools, academies and HGTC's golf course management program could find a way to make the course profitable. Isn't that worth a shot ?
