LEAD LETTER OF THE WEEK

Letter | Kudos for Myrtle Beach-area, Charleston VA centers

May 11, 2014

There has been plenty of coverage of the problems that veterans face when seeking services through the Veterans Administration.

I am writing to bring attention to and commend the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Myrtle Beach and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Charleston for the excellent care I have received, and for the dedication of the staff to accomplish their mission.

I have been a patient of both facilities since moving to Murrells Inlet three years ago and the care I have received for problems related to Vietnam service, and most recently cancer, has been the equal of or better than the treatment I received in some of the best hospitals in Georgia and before that, in New York.

I trust that some have had problems there but good news rarely makes headlines. In this case the public needs to understand that our nearby veterans facilities are providing outstanding patient care while the number of patients is growing and their funding is not growing to meet all of the challenges.

The writer served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1966 to 1972 and lives in Murrells Inlet.
