NAME: Tim Scott.

AGE: 48. Born September 19, 1965.

RESIDENCE: North Charleston.

POLITICAL AFFILIATION: Republican Party.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: Appointed to finish out two-year term when Jim DeMint resigned from the Senate Jan. 1, 2013. Elected to U.S. House in 2010. Previously in South Carolina's state House and on Charleston County Council.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Has worked in the insurance industry and as a financial adviser.

NOTABLE: Scott is the only black Republican in the U.S. Senate and the first black senator from South Carolina.

ON THE ISSUES: Scott has been vocal in his support of a Savannah River Site nuclear fuel facility that the Obama administration has says it wants to shutter.

NAME: Jill Bossi.

AGE: 55. Born April 4, 1959.

RESIDENCE: Tega Cay.

POLITICAL AFFILIATION: American Party.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: None.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Served as chief procurement officer for the American Red Cross. Worked in supply chain management for Bank of America, Experian North America and Verizon Wireless.

NOTABLE:

ON THE ISSUES: Bossi pledges she'd only serve a total of eight years in the Senate if she's successful in the special election and then in a race for a full term in 2016. She said she views herself as a centrist and the sort of representative who would be able to forge unity in a divided Congress she said currently represents the “disintegration of civil discourse.”

NAME: Joyce Dickerson.

AGE: 68. Born June 14, 1945.

RESIDENCE: Columbia.

POLITICAL AFFILIATION: Democratic Party.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: Richland County Council member since 2005. Former chairwoman of the National Foundation for Women Legislators. Past president of the Women of the National Association of Counties.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Retired. Worked as compliance auditor. Has had several businesses, including as a salon owner and cosmetologist.

NOTABLE: If nominated, Dickerson would be South Carolina's first black woman nominated for U.S. Senate.

ON THE ISSUES: Dickerson says she feels strongly about protecting benefits for senior citizens and veterans, as well as helping veterans readjust and find jobs once they return to the civilian workforce. She also said she would work toward securing pay equity for women.

POLITICAL AFFILIATION: Democratic Party.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: York County Council member, 1970s.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Retired from customer service work in the telecommunications industry.

NOTABLE: If elected, Moore would be the eighth black person to serve in the United State Senate since Reconstruction.

ON THE ISSUES: Moore says he would focus on space-based solar energy and immigration reform. He also wants to find a way to alleviate what he sees as congressional gridlock by trying to bring a reasonable voice to differing sides.

NAME: Harry Pavilack

AGE: 73. Born September 14, 1940.

RESIDENCE: Myrtle Beach.

POLITICAL AFFILIATION: Democratic Party.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: Candidate for Congress, 2012.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Attorney.

NOTABLE: Owing creditors more than $70 million, Pavilack filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010. He blamed failed real estate investments and says the issues are nearly resolved.

ON THE ISSUES: Pavilack says he wants to work toward legalizing medicinal marijuana use in the United States, strengthening the nation's education system and paying down the federal debt.

NAME: Randall Young.

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE: Sought Republican nomination in special election for House District 17 in 2013, coming in last place with 24 votes. Served as board member of the South Tyger River Watershed Commission.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Retired farmer.

NOTABLE: Young was evicted from his residence earlier this year and subsequently arrested after refusing to leave the property. Due in court in mid-June.
