— The final Surfside Beach Town Council seat was won by another political newcomer in a runoff election Tuesday.

Ralph Magliette bested former councilman Sammy Truett by a 332-240 vote margin based on unofficial totals. Election results are preliminary pending a certification hearing at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Two weeks ago, David Pellegrino and former councilman Bob Childs were elected. The three newly elected council members will serve four-year terms beginning May 13.

Sammy Truett said he was disappointed by the results and said that he misses working for the town as a councilman, but isn’t sure if he would run again when the next election rolls around.

“The negativity was just too much to overcome,” he said.

The negative campaigning came in the form of anonymous mailers that referenced a previous charge with the S.C. Ethics Commission.

Magliette said that he was glad people heard his message about putting people first and treating people with “loving kindness.”

“I’m very pleased,” he said. “It’s very humbling. I worked very hard. I walked the town twice, handed out 5,000 fliers. I’ve worked nonstop since January 27.”

About 570 ballots were cast Tuesday, including absentee voters, which is about 19 percent voter turnout, according to the town’s municipal election commission.

Mayor Doug Samples said he is looking forward to working with the new members of Town Council.
