Myrtle Beach committee proposes program designed to give seniors discounts at area attractions

Senior citizens could soon be able to check out Grand Strand attractions if businesses begin to participate in the city and the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce’s Senior Sample Days.

The program is designed to give senior citizens – those age 55 and up – a deep discount at area attractions.

The Myrtle Beach Senior Advisory Committee proposed the idea to get seniors actively involved in the city while sharing their experiences with others, who would, in turn, also participate in things the city has to offer.

“We’ll get people going out,” Senior Advisory Committee Chairman Bill Schmitt said, adding that while he might not visit an attraction due to mobility issues, it’s human nature for people to take advantage of a good deal.

Schmitt pointed out that several businesses already offer smaller discounts for senior citizens, and said that for Senior Sample Days to work, seniors need to do their part.

“There’s any number of businesses around here that offer discounts for seniors, but it’s not up on a sign or advertised,” he said. “It’s up to seniors to ask if they have a senior discount. … If they don’t ask, then they’re not going to get it.”

City spokesman Mark Kruea said 27 percent of residents are 55 years old or older, according to the most recent census.

“More than one in four residents are senior citizens,” he said. “Many of them are retired and may be on a fixed income. They may not be able to go out and spend money [on attractions].”

The only attraction to sign up for the program so far is WonderWorks at Broadway at the Beach, Kruea said, which will admit seniors to the venue on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays in May for $9.99. A regular admission ticket is $23.99.

Kruea said Senior Sample Days benefit both the senior citizens and the city’s attractions when it’s not peak season.

“They get a great discount, sample one of the local destinations, and share their experience by word of mouth with others,” he said. “It gives them a break, helps businesses during a slow time and spreads the word.”

To participate in Senior Sample Days, a business must offer a signature discount for seniors during a defined period of time. To submit a promotion, email MyrtleBeach.AreaChamber@visitmyrtlebeach.com.
