Gallo homers again, Myrtle Beach Pelicans finish off 7-0 road trip

From staff reportsApril 14, 2014

Myrtle Beach third baseman Joey Gallo (left) has hit five home runs in as many games.

— Joey Gallo was named Carolina League Player of the Week on Monday.

And the home run barrage that helped the Myrtle Beach Pelicans third baseman earn the honor was extended into this week.

Gallo hit his fifth home run in as many games on Monday to help the Pelicans defeat the Salem Red Sox 9-6, a win that capped a perfect 7-0 road trip.

Gallo played a big role in it. He leads the league in home runs after hitting two Thursday at Wilmington and one each on Friday and Sunday against Salem before his two-run shot in the third inning Monday pushed his total to five.

His blast Monday tied the game at 3. Salem then scored three runs in the fourth to go up 6-3.

Myrtle Beach rallied back with four in the sixth, highlighted by Jorge Alfaro’s two run double. The Pelicans (7-4) tacked on one run in each of the seventh and ninth innings en route to completing a four-game sweep against Salem, which swept a season-opening four-game set in Myrtle Beach.

Gallo added a pair of sacrifice flies to finish with four RBIs on Monday and Alfaro, who also had a solo home run in the second, had three.

Chris Garia and Preston Beck had three hits each for the Pelicans.

Alex Claudio (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings.
