Horry County school board to resume discussion of building plans Monday

School building plans and funding will be discussed at Monday’s Horry County school board meeting, which will begin at 6 p.m. at the district office on Four Mile Road in Conway.

The board looked at a building plan suggested by board member Jeffrey Garland at its last meeting, but Garland was unable to attend the meeting and answer questions that were raised by some board members. Chairman Joe DeFeo said discussion will resume on the plan, which outlines building priorities for both seven- and 10-year spans, with no tax increase, and the board will receive more information on the district’s cash flow and borrowing options.

“We should decide the type of money we’re going to spend while we’re going through the process,” DeFeo said. “There’s no holdup here because [the funding] doesn’t matter until the designs are approved.”

A steering committee is working with SHW Group architectural firm to design new prototypes for Horry County Schools’ future elementary/intermediate schools and middle schools that will meet future capacity needs and support the district’s educational programs, such as the personalized digital learning initiative.
