• The Democratic Women’s Council of Horry County has kicked off its annual scholarship essay contest.
This year’s essay theme is “Why electing a Democratic governor in 2014 is crucial for South Carolina.”
Graduating high school seniors and undergraduate college students who are registered to vote in Horry County are eligible to enter to win one of two $1,000 scholarships.
Essays must be received no later than April 14. The contest application and a complete set of rules and criteria are available at the DWCHC website, www.dwchc.com. Information also can be obtained by calling essay committee chair Milly Vaughn at email@example.com.
As in past years, a booklet containing all the winning essays will be published, with ad sales in the booklet and other fundraising activities of the council going to support the scholarships.

• Horry County GOP will hold a Bronze Elephant Dinner featuring U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H. The dinner will be held at Pine Lakes Country Club on Friday. • Georgetown County Republican Party will hold a free meet-and-greet event at 4 p.m. on Friday, with U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H. The event will happen at NOSH Restaurant at 10880 Ocean Highway in Pawleys Island.
