Two Horry County middle schools will compete in the inaugural Battle of the Carolinas Middle School Mock Trial Competition Friday and Saturday at the Horry County Government and Justice Center, 1301 Second Ave., Conway, according to the S.C. Bar.

Forestbrook Middle School, winner of the 2013 S.C. Bar Middle School Mock Trial State Competition, and first-runner-up Ocean Bay Middle School, will join the state’s other top four teams, Dent Middle School and Dutch Fork Middle School, to compete against the top four teams from North Carolina: Ridge Road Middle School, McDougle Middle School, the Academy at Lincoln and Wayne School of Engineering.

Students will present the plaintiff and defense sides of a fictitious case before a panel of local volunteer lawyers and judges, and also will fill the roles of defendant, witnesses, bailiffs and timekeepers. Each team will be judged on presentation skills, not the legal merits of the case, and they will have the same case that was used in their respective 2013 regional and state mock trial competitions.

The Battle of the Carolinas is a project between the S.C. Bar and the N.C. Bar Association Foundation. The program is supported by the S.C. Bar Law Related Education Division, S.C. Bar Foundation, N.C. Law Related Education Division and N.C. Bar Association Foundation.
