An Horry County grand jury indicted a 27-year-old Conway man in connection with a fatal January shooting in the city, according to court records.

Barry Dewitt Bethea, 21, was indicted on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to indictments from the grand jury, which met Thursday.

Conway police charged Bethea in the Jan. 6 shooting of 23-year-old Joey Pyatt, who died at Conway Medical Center while being treated for a gunshot wound.

Police were called about 1 p.m. that day for gunshots being fired in the area of Pitman Street and Woodward Drive, Lt. Selena Small said at the time. Officers found Pyatt had been shot and EMS took him to the hospital.

Police also charged San MeGales Huffman, 27, also of Conway, but indictments were not returned in his case. Huffman was charged with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Both men remain jailed at J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bond.

Bethea had previously been charged on July 2 with unlawful carrying of a weapon and trespassing by Horry County police and eight days later he was charged in a June 22 armed robbery along Rose Moss Road.
