CCU to hold educational forum on Common Core State Standards

vgrooms@thesunnews.comMarch 25, 2014

“The Common Core Standards: Facts and Myths” will be held April 9 from 6-8 p.m. at Coastal Carolina University’s Wheelwright Auditorium.

South Carolina has adopted the standards for K-12 English language arts and mathematics. The purpose of the educational forum, sponsored by CCU’s Spadoni College of Education’s Consortium for Educational Research and Evaluation, is to address issues and perspectives about the development, intent, content and implementation of the standards.

The following questions will be addressed at the event:

•  Do the standards represent the most contemporary and relevant ideas that prepare all students for success in college, career and life?

•  To what extent do teachers retain the academic professional autonomy to make decisions about curriculum, instruction and assessment practices?

•  How will assessment data of student learning be collected and used?

•  How do the standards address students with special needs and disabilities?

The public is invited and can register online at, or call Lynne Brock at 349-2629.
