A Longs woman was arrested Tuesday in connection with a child abuse investigation, according to an Horry County police report.

Jennifer Renee Daniell, 30, is charged with cruelty to children. She was booked and released from J. Reuben Long Detention Center Tuesday on $2,500 bail.

Horry County police were called Monday because a 10-year-old boy had bruising on both thighs. He told officers he was hit with a horse whip, had his mattress removed and had some meals taken away as punishment for stealing a cookie.

Daniell told police she never used a horse whip, but did use a wooden stick wrapped in leather to hit the child as punishment and said she did take his mattress away but never failed to provide food to the child, the report said.

She told officers a Department of Social Services supervisor told her that punishment was OK as long as it did not leave permanent scarring, according to the report.

The child was placed in a temporary foster home.
