Horry County authorities respond to fatal crash

Horry County emergency officials are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Wednesday near the Nichols community, according to authorities.

The crash was reported at 7:47 a.m. Wednesday on S.C. 917 at Shelly Lane, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol’s real-time traffic information.

Troopers found a 2004 GMC pickup truck had ran off the left side of the road and overturned, said Cpl. Sonny Collins with the highway patrol. The driver was going north on S.C. 917 in Horry County near the intersection of Shelly Lane.

The driver was wearing a seatbelt, but died at the scene of the crash, Collins said.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge identified the driver as Gerald Gargiloa, 67, of Green Sea, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash from internal injuries.
