Re: March 4 letter from Francine Dube, ”Do your homework to see need for pipeline”

In typical conservative fashion, Dube starts off trying to sound reasonable and suggests a non-partisan discussion of the Keystone pipeline, and immediately makes a derisive comment about liberals. That aside, I invite her to, as she says, walk the walk and do some homework, which she apparently didn't do before banging off her letter to The Sun News.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, the federal agency responsible for pipeline safety reports that there have been 10,273 pipeline incidents between 1992 and 2011. This number includes 1,568 injuries, 384 fatalities, $5,354,942,041 in property damage, and 2,529,868 barrels of spilled hazardous liquid (including crude oil).

This is no paltry number. So again, if this pipeline is indeed going to be built, I encourage everyone to call your congressperson, call your senator, and demand, as a constituent that they do everything in their power to make sure that this pipeline is built in the safest, most well-thought-out fashion possible.

Demand that it is not rushed through as a partisan propaganda event as Rush, U.S. Rep. Tom Rice and various Fox News pundits suggest. Let's make sure that this does not become yet another national tragedy resulting from political chicanery.
