Horry-Georgetown Technical College is expanding its job fair experience this year, holding one at all three of its campuses – Conway, Grand Strand and Georgetown – and piloting a virtual job fair through Facebook.

The job fairs will be held Tuesday through Thursday for HGTC students and alumni, and will be arranged by the majors that are specific to each campus, said April Garner, coordinator of HGTC’s Career Resource Center. To access the virtual fair, participants must go to the HGTC Career Resource Center Facebook page, www.facebook.com/HGTCCareers, and press the “Like” button.

“We had to remember our nontraditional base,” said Garner of the virtual job fair, adding that many HGTC students have demanding schedules that include work and family, and need an easier avenue to job information. “This is for everyone. It will get students engaged in social media, something they’re doing constantly, but it’s not too elaborate for those who haven’t yet embraced it.”

Garner said anyone who does not know how to use Facebook can visit the center, where they will be shown how to set up their profile. She said the center’s Facebook page is not one-dimensional and, in addition to job information, offers career development advice so that participants have the tools to be successful on interviews. She said the college also is considering using Instagram and building up its Twitter interaction.

HGTC’s job fair will feature 50 employers and colleges that can submit open positions and transfer opportunities that will be available through a group link via Facebook, Garner said. Participants will be able to check the page regularly for leads and updates, and connect with employers for 30 days after a position is posted.

“We were just trying to be creative about it,” Garner said. “We have to think of what our network looks like and what it could be. With merging the traditional with the online component, students really don’t have an excuse. It’s all right there for them.”

The schedule for those attending the job fair in person is:

•  Tuesday | Conway campus, building 1100, for majors in business, hospitality/tourism, digital arts, early care and education, engineering, information technology, HVAC, golf and sports turf management, cosmetology, automated office technology/medical administrative, criminal justice, radiologic technology, culinary and an Associate in Arts and Associate in Science.

•  Wednesday | Grand Strand campus, Speir building 1000 and building 200, for majors in nursing, billing and coding/HIM, cosmetology, esthetics and nail techs, massage therapy, dental hygiene, surgical technology, pharmacy technician, PTA, EMT/fire science, culinary, paralegal and an Associate in Arts and Associate in Science.
