A 40-year-old Myrtle Beach man was charged with attempted murder and other offenses in connection with a 35-year-old woman reporting she was assaulted, according to authorities.

James Christopher Bellamy, 40, was arrested early Sunday morning in the 400 block of Flagg Street and is facing charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

The victim stopped a passing officer about 9 p.m. Saturday at 405 N. Ocean Blvd., to report the assault, police said.

The victim pointed to Bellamy, who was walking out of the parking lot toward Fifth Avenue, to report he had assault her, according to the report. Officers stopped Bellamy and during a search found a utility knife.

The victim said she had previously lived with Bellamy for about nine months, but had moved out because he had been drinking and was abusive, according to the report. The victim said she went Saturday night to hang out with Bellamy and he got upset after a few drinks.

The victim said after their friends left the room, Bellamy told her he was going to show her how much she hurt him and he wrapped a towel around her throat and choked her, according to the report. The victim said Bellamy then wrapped a T-shirt around her neck and strangled her.

The victim said Bellamy also put his hands around her neck and threatened to kill her, then himself, according to the report. The victim said she kicked Bellamy in an attempt to get away and he punched her in the face.

The victim said she tried to leave, but Bellamy would demand she sit down, then he would choke her, according to the report. The victim said Bellamy went into the bathroom and her daughter called and she asked for help.

The victim said her daughter and two male friends came to the room and found Bellamy holding a knife to the victim's throat, according to the report. The victim said her daughter hit Bellamy with a radio and then they ran out of the room.

The witness told police she arrived at the motel and found Bellamy holding a knife to the victim's throat and corroborated the victim's statements.
