Myrtle Beach firefighters battle townhouse fire on 44th Avenue North.

Myrtle Beach firefighters are on the scene of a fire at a townhouse complex on 44th Avenue North in the city.

The fire is in building I of the Carolina Ridge townhouse complex and appears to be in the attic.

Heavy smoke flowed from one unit in the row of homes.

Several residents of building I are outside the building. Diana Medford lives two doors away from where the fire started.

“I was outside on the back patio and embers were coming from the chimney,” Medford said.

She said the neighbor that lives between her and the unit where the fire appears to have started called 911.

Medford ran her 3 year old daughter away from the scene.

“My mom lives a couple blocks away, thank God, so she took my daughter,” she said.

Medford said the owner of the unit that caught fire wasn’t home when the fire started. She said she was praying the fire didn’t extend into any other homes.

The cause remains under investigation.
