One dog died in fire that destroyed a house in Horry County Friday evening.

Assistant Chief Scott Thompson with Horry County Fire Rescue said firefighters from four stations were called about 5:30 p.m. when a family member returned to their home on Blackjack Lane and found smoke inside.

A man who lives at the home, which is in the Cabot’s Creek subdivision off S.C. 544 north of Palmetto Bays Elementary School, ran inside to try to get the family’s four dogs, Thompson said. The three other dogs were fine and the owner was evaluated for smoke inhalation but suffered no injuries.

Thompson said a total of three people lived in the home, but none were home when the fire started.

Firefighters aren’t sure what sparked the blaze and are investigating the cause.
