Construction employment nationwide rose to its highest level in 4 1/2 years in January despite the severe winter weather in much of the country, according to The Associated General Contractors of America.

The group said that nearly 6,000,000 had jobs in construction during the month, up 48,000 from December.

The biggest January gains were in nonresidential construction jobs, which totaled 31,300 additional jobs in January and 57,000 in the previous 12 months. Residential construction added 16,800 jobs in the month and 121,400 for the year.
