Myrtle Beach triathlon in the works for September

Pete Politis, a member of the Myrtle Beach Triathlon Club, is working with the city to bring a large triathlon to the area later this year.

While details still are being worked out, Politis said he is working with Set Up Events to bring the race to town, which would consist of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run.

The proposed event, scheduled for Sept. 9, is on the Myrtle Beach Special Events Technical Review Committee agenda to be discussed Wednesday and expected to go before City Council Feb. 11.

“If this goes through it’s going to be spectacular,” Politis said. “It’s going to highlight Myrtle Beach in a way it hasn’t been before.”

He said he expects to draw about 500 people to the triathlon in its first year, with the potential for seeing up to 1,500 after the event gets established.

Politis said he is working on getting a sponsor and putting the final touches on the event and hopes to have it all figured out in the next few weeks.

“It’s about 99 percent right now,” he said. “I’ve already gotten the blessing from the city, the county and the state.”
