Myrtle Beach is one of the top three destinations this summer based on bookings on the FlipKey.com vacation rental website, which one tourism leader says is a good sign for the season.
Myrtle Beach followed No. 1 Rio de Janeiro and No. 2 Ocean City, Md., as the most popular on FlipKey, which is the vacation rental arm of TripAdvisor. The rankings were released this week; January is typically when travelers start booking their vacations for the year.
“We’re not even finished with January yet, so to see this type of ranking is great news for our upcoming summer season in the Myrtle Beach area,” Brad Dean, president of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, said in a news release.
Dean also cited earlier starts on some seasonal flights at Myrtle Beach International Airport as another positive sign for summer. Spirit Airlines plans to start flights to Philadelphia and Charleston, W.Va., in March, a couple of weeks earlier than last year, and WestJet also plans to start its flights to Canada in March, about two months earlier than its inaugural year in Myrtle Beach in 2013.
“The signs are encouraging that lots of new and returning visitors will be spending time with us in 2014,” Dean said.
