Surfside Beach released a list of special events to celebrate the town’s first 50 years.
On March 14, exactly 50 years since the town, “The Family Beach,” was established there will be a ceremony at the library to acknowledge the 50 years since incorporation and the people who have been instrumental to the town. The ceremony will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and light refreshments will be served.
In May, the town will hold a Founder’s Day Weekend full of events starting May 2 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a beach music party on Surfside Drive.
On May 3, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., there will be a carnival style celebration in the Surfside Beach Pier parking lot with a juggler, stilt walker, magician, games, cotton candy, popcorn, candy apples, hot dogs and a carousel. A fireworks display will start at 9 p.m. and 50th Anniversary hats and shirts will be available for purchase.
Celebrations will start early May 4 with a “Blessing of the Beach” ceremony at 7 a.m. at the Surfside Beach Pier. Then from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. there will be music and a picnic at Passive Park.
On Oct. 10, the town will show an old-fashioned drive-in movie.
The celebrations end Oct. 11 with an Oyster Roast and Jazz Music, Bar-B-Que and Blue Grass Music and a Car show.
