Temporary bridge to serve Cherry Grove until first of summer

January 21, 2014

A sturdy, but temporary, bridge has been installed at 52nd Avenue North for those headed to the Cherry Grove Boat Ramp at Williams Creek and it will be in use until the bridge at 53rd Avenue North is replaced.

The S.C. Department of Transportation, which owns both bridges, had the 53rd Avenue North bridge inspected a few years ago and was determined that major repairs were needed and that it was unsafe for vehicles other than cars, said Pat Dowling, spokesman for the city of North Myrtle Beach. The agency built the temporary bridge, which can accommodate all vehicles, including trucks, emergency vehicles and those with boats and trailers, he said.

The new 53rd Avenue North bridge is expected to be ready around June 9, after which the temporary bridge will be taken down.
