New principal tapped for North Myrtle Beach Middle School, more Horry County Schools administrators to retire

— Mark Porter, principal at Loris Elementary School, was named the new principal for North Myrtle Beach Middle School by the Horry County school board Monday night.

Porter will transfer to the school July 1, following the retirement of Principal Virginia Horton.

Principal Johnny Calder from Forestbrook Elementary School and Principal Cathy Slater from Palmetto Bays Elementary School also plan to retire at the end of the school year.

Seven Horry County Schools principals have opted to retire, with six of them leaving elementary schools. The district doesn’t tend to lose that many principals at one time, said Mary Anderson, an HCS human resources director, but it’s just a natural progression for those who joined the district around the same time.

Principal openings at Loris, Forestbrook and Palmetto Bays are posted on the district’s website, www.horrycountyschools.net. Principal Angela Huggins filled the top position at Pee Dee Elementary School Jan. 6, and earlier principal openings announced for River Oaks, St. James and Burgess elementary schools already have closed.

Screening has begun and will continue until candidates are recommended to the Horry County school board, said Anderson, adding that a number of internal and external candidates applied for those positions.
