More travelers searched for hotels in Myrtle Beach on Yahoo this year than any other destination in the country except Las Vegas, a ranking the beach’s main tourism promoter says shows that the Grand Strand continues to gain popularity.

Myrtle Beach ranked second in the rankings of the top 10 travel searches on Yahoo in 2013, behind Las Vegas. The rankings are based on hotel searches, Yahoo says.

Myrtle Beach ranked ahead of New Orleans, Key West and Atlantic City, which rounded out the top five.

“This ranking goes to show that the Myrtle Beach brand continues to grow in awareness and popularity for vacationers all across the country,” Brad Dean, president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, said in a news release.

Yahoo noted that one surprise in the list was that New York City didn’t make the cut. Neither did Chicago or Los Angeles, which Yahoo notes could suggest that travelers might be saving money and vacationing more locally than previously.

The rankings:

1. Las Vegas

2. Myrtle Beach

3. New Orleans

4. Key West

5. Atlantic City

6. Virginia Beach

7. Gatlinburg

8. San Diego

9. San Francisco

10. Santa Barbara
