Diaz surges as Byrd stumbles at Q-school

From staff reportsDecember 12, 2013

Myrtle Beach resident Roberto Diaz rebounded from two bogies on his first nine holes to knock in three birdies on his second nine en route to a 1-under par 71 in the first round of Q-school qualifying at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.

Murrells Inlet native Zack Byrd went the opposite way.

After an even-par 36 on the front nine, Byrd shot six-over par on the back nine, including a triple bogey on the par-5 15th, to finish at 6-over for the day.

Diaz is currently tied for 64th, seven strokes behind leader Justin Shin (8-under), while Byrd is tied for 145th out of 152 in the six-round event that will leave the top 45 with a spot on the Web.com tour in varying capacities.
