Myrtle Beach Seahawks win state title over Daniel on last-second FG

For The Sun NewsDecember 7, 2013

COLUMBIA Myrtle Beach won its seventh state title in school history, defeating Daniel 24-21 in Saturday's Class AAA state final at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Junior kicker Sean Huggins' 22-yard field goal as time expired capped a 4:02 drive that went 66 yards in the final minutes. Myrtle Beach (11-4), trailing by seven points early in the second half, got three touchdown passes from quarterback Drayton Arnold in the win. The win was Myrtle Beach's eighth straight and 10th in 11 games after starting 1-3. It was Daniel's only loss of the season after the Lions started 14-0.

It is the second state title for Myrtle Beach coach Mickey Wilson, who took over the program prior to the 2009 season. Myrtle Beach also won the 2010 state title.

6:07 p.m.

MYRTLE BEACH WINS! Huggins hits a 22-yard field goal, and Myrtle Beach walks off with a 24-21 win and the 7th state title in school history. The Seahawks started 1-3 this year. Story to come

6:05 p.m.

Myrtle Beach on the nine-yard line with 26 seconds left. A chip shop away from a state title.

6:03 p.m.

"Arnold to Vaughn for 22 moves it to the 11. Tick, tick, tick. MB in FG range."

6:02 p.m.

"Maybe the biggest pass of Drayton Arnold's season. 25 yards to Kelton Greene on 3rd and 22. MB ball at Daniel 49."

5:56 p.m.

And it's tied up again. Austin Barnes of Daniel plows in from 5 yards out to make it 21-21. Myrtle Beach getting the ball back with 4:02 remaining. More magic from the sophomore Mr. Arnold? We'll see.

5:52 p.m.

Jae'Lon Oglesby breaks off a 42-yard run, Daniel threatening to tie it up.

5:47 p.m.

Daniel's third pass interference penalty of the second half set Myrtle Beach up at the 3-yard line and Drayton Arnold hits Graham Vaugn for the go-ahead touchdown. Myrtle Beach leads 21-14 midway through the fourth quarter. It's Arnold's third passing TD, Graham's second receiving.

5:44 p.m.

Seahawks stop Daniel on yet another fourth down. Get the ball back midway through the fourth. A Graham Vaughn reception has them at first and goal.

5:35 p.m.

"That one looked awfully similar to Arnold's first TD pass. Scrambled out of pocket, found an open receiver."

5:31 p.m.

And just like that it's tied up. Drayton Arnold finds C.J. Finkley for an 18-yard TD pass with 40 seconds left in the third quarter. That's Arnold's second on the day. Now it's up the the Seahawks defense to stop Daniel.

5:30 p.m.

Drayton Arnold to Kelton Greene connection is helping Myrtle Beach move down the field. Multiple first downs for the two on the drive.

5:22 p.m.

Had to happen eventually. Myrtle Beach flipped the field and sent Daniel back to their own 19-yard line. Oglesby subsequently broke off an 81-yard TD run. I think it's safe to say he was mad about the fumbles. Daniel leads 14-7 late in the third quarter.

5:16 p.m.

No rest for the weary, though. Seahawks defense sent right back out after a punt from their own 2-yard line. Oglesby fumbles again, Seahawks recover. Take over the ball at their own 28. That's two fumble recoveries and an interception for Myrtle Beach on the day. Still midway in the third quarter.

5:12 p.m.

Seahawks bend but don't break. Daniel moves the ball all the way down the field, but is stopped on fourth and goal from the 2-yard line. Seahawks take over. Score still tied 7-7.

"Daniel went 62 yards on 11 straight rushes, but couldn't get the last two."

5:06 p.m.

Daniel gets the ball to open the second half. Start at their own 36-yard line.

4:51 p.m.

"The Daniel RB entered the game with 2,001 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground and another 538 and 6 TDs receiving."

4:32 p.m.

And just like that -- the lead is gone. Daniel's Amir Trapp picked off a Drayton Arnold pass and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown. Myrtle Beach has 1:20 left in the first half, score tied 7-7.

4:30 p.m.

Myrtle Beach forced to punt after interception, then forced a turnover on downs from Daniel. Seahawks hold a 7-0 lead with the ball as time winds down in the first half.

4:28 p.m.

"Daniel is about to punt again. The Lions have yet to record a first down against Myrtle Beach through the first 15:33 of game time."

4:25 p.m.

Jaden Grayer with the pick. Myrtle Beach gets its second turnover of the day and the Seahawks take over on their own 11-yard line midway through the second quarter, up 7-0.
