Conway man charged after woman reports being beaten

— A Conway man was charged after a 32-year-old woman reported she was knocked unconscious and beaten when she tried to leave him, according to a police report.

Steven James Mazzola, 36, was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center at 7:45 a.m. Thursday on a charge of criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, according to jail records. He remains held pending a bond hearing.

Horry County police were called to Conway Medical Center where a 32-year-old woman was being treated for injuries she said she suffered between 12:30 and 5 a.m. Thursday, according to the report. The victim said she was cleaning because she planned to leave Mazzola and they began to argue at their shared apartment at 3555 S.C. 544 in Conway.

The victim said Mazzola punched her, which caused her to fall and become unconsciousness, according to the report. The victim said she woke up to Mazzola trying to remove her clothing so she went to get her phone to call 911.

The victim said Mazzola broke her phone, punched her in the head and held her by her throat, according to the report. The victim said Mazzola went to sleep and she left and went to the emergency room.

Officers found Mazzola inside the apartment and he was arrested without incident, according to the report.
