Myrtle Beach boy places second in Panthers, Punt, Pass and Kick competition

— Rylan Hackett’s combined punt, pass and kick at Sunday’s Carolina Panthers game earned him a second place.

The 7-year-old second grader at Palmetto Academy competed against three other 6- and 7-year-old boys Sunday after winning the Punt, Pass and Kick sectional event held in Florence in October.

The Hackett’s are waiting to learn his official score, but his mother, Jamie Hackett, said she thought it was around 135 feet. The winning boy punted, passed and kicked a total of 159 feet and 2 inches on Sunday. The state chairman of the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick did not immediately return a request for comment Monday.

“It was really nice,” said Jamie Hackett, Rylan’s mother. “They got to run out on the field before the players at the beginning of the game. And during a commercial break they were able to take pictures. And he got a football that says second place.”

Rylan placed first in his age group at the local level through Myrtle Beach’s recreation league to earn a trip to sectionals. Rylan plays in two recreation leagues, one with the city of Myrtle Beach and one in Socastee.

The top four winners in each age group across all NFL tams will compete in the national finals, which is held during the National Football Conference championship. There are 128 athletes in each of the five categories.
