MYRTLE BEACH — A two-alarm fire on the south end of Myrtle Beach was the second blaze at the same hotel within a week.
Fire crews were called at 1 p.m. Friday for the fire at the Holiday South at 2605 South Ocean Boulevard and found smoke and flames showing from the upper floors of the building, said Lt. Christian Sliker.
Sliker said it was the second fire at the hotel this week, but did not have the date of the first fire.
Because of the size and intensity of the blaze, crews determined Friday’s incident it to be a two-alarm fire, Sliker said. It was controlled by 1:45 p.m. Friday, but crews remained on scene in “overhaul mode.”
Firefighters could be seen going into each room at the six-story hotel which was blanketed in white and brown smoke.
Nearby residents said the hotel had been vacant for several months, but Roger Huntington said he often sees signs of someone staying at the hotel. He and his wife, Lisa Huntington, reported seeing a sliding glass door open recently and said curtains have fluttered, but neither have seen any people from the sidewalk.
Holiday South and neighboring Golden Sands motel were each sold on Nov. 8 to R&K Properties, according to Horry County property records. The sale was valued at $1.2 million.
Myrtle Beach city officials had been in talks with the property owners to demolish the buildings, but nothing had been finalized as of Friday, said Mark Kruea, Myrtle Beach city spokesman.
Traffic was stopped for about a block on Ocean Boulevard for more than two hours while emergency crews fought and investigated the fire.
Huntington arrived about 20 minutes after Friday’s blaze started, but he saw the fire earlier this week. He couldn’t remember the day of the fire, but said there was heavy smoke coming from the third floor and that it was heaviest on the beach side. Charred furniture was thrown out of the building and air conditioning units mounted to windows were knocked out, he said.
Both fires are being investigated, Sliker said.
