Columbia man charged in assault, kidnapping of Myrtle Beach woman

— A Columbia man was charged in Myrtle Beach in connection with a woman being choked until she went unconscious three times and then stealing her cellphone, $7 and cigarettes, according to a police report.

Kerwin Eugene Brown, 33, of Columbia was charged with second-degree assault and battery, kidnapping and larceny less than $2,000, after he was taken into custody police a block from where the assault occurred at 8 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

The 31-year-old victim told police that Brown was a boyfriend, but had been out of town for the last two weeks and returned Tuesday to her apartment at 401 Sixth Ave. N., according to the report. The victim said Brown asked her if she had been intimate with someone else and she admitted that she had been.

The victim said Brown became enraged and punched her several times before he choked her three times and she went unconscious, according to the report. The victim said Brown refused to allow her to leave and threatened her.

The victim said when she woke up after the third time she went to the bathroom to clean blood from her nose and Brown left the room, according to the report. The victim reported Brown took her belongings and she went to a 54-year-old woman’s apartment to call police.

Officers noted the woman suffered injuries to her face, eyes and neck, according to the report. The victim was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for treatment.
