MYRTLE BEACH — Troopers with the S.C. Highway Patrol are asking for the public’s help in identifying a vehicle that struck and killed a mo-ped rider who had been involved in a separate vehicle crash Tuesday night near Pawleys Island.
Patrick Loper, 57, of Pawleys Island died at 11:47 a.m. Wednesday, said Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson.
The initial crash occurred involving the mo-ped rider and while the rider was in the road they were struck about 11 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 17 just north of Pawleys Island, said Cpl. Sonny Collins with the S.C. Highway Patrol. The rider suffered various injuries and was in serious condition after being taken to a local hospital.
The vehicle that struck the rider left the scene and was described as a possible Honda Civic manufactured between the years 2006 to 2011, Collins said.
Troopers with the S.C. Highway Patrol’s Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team are investigating the incident, but Collins said anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash and saw the incident or knows of a similar vehicle with fresh damage can help them.
“We need all tips, no matter how small,” Collins said.
