MYRTLE BEACH — If you see film crews following around people who aren’t “Welcome to Myrtle Manor” cast members, don’t be alarmed. Four local mixed martial arts fighters are hoping to be part of a proposed docu-series about the sport.
Filming began last month. It will include fights expected to be held at the House of Blues Myrtle Beach in November and will end with follow-up interviews in December, according to Chris Mammarelli, supervising producer on the project.
“Our goal is to humanize the participants of MMA,” he said. “They’re not all barbaric or animalistic and want to get in there and rip each other’s heads off. There are a lot of people who care about the sportsmanship of it.”
Cameras are following around 12 fighters total – four each from Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Charlotte, including two women – and will document not only their training, but their lives as they prepare for their November fights.
As of now Mammarelli said the project is not attached to a network and he hopes to shop the finished product soon after filming is done.
