The Municipal Election Commission in Atlantic Beach announced a commission meeting would be held Wednesday, but Town Manager William Booker said it’s not true.
Booker said he isn’t sure who sent the announcement, which says the MEC will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Atlantic Beach Community Center or at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday at Nora Leaner’s Restaurant, “if not allowed in [the] community center.”
The agenda says the commission will discuss election day on Nov. 5 and the alleged election day on Nov. 12.
Booker said the town’s ordinance stipulates elections in odd years will fall on the second Tuesday of November, putting this year’s election on Nov. 12.
“Some people are trying to confuse Atlantic Beach voters about the real date for their election,” he said. “They are trying to sabotage the election.”
Seats held by councilwomen Carolyn Cole and Windy Price are expiring. Booker said neither women is on the ballot. Both have declared intent to run as write-in candidates.
On the ballot this year for the two seats are Lenearl Evans, Kenneth McLaurin and former Mayor Retha Pierce.
