MYRTLE BEACH — Teams from Aynor, Forestbrook, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Ocean Bay, St. James and Whittemore Park middle schools will compete, along with four other schools, for the Coastal region in the S.C. Bar Regional Middle School Mock Trial Competition Nov. 2 at the Conway Courthouse, 1301 Second Ave. in Conway.
Students will present both sides of a fictitious civil case for a panel of local volunteer lawyers and judges. The roles of attorneys, witnesses, bailiffs and timekeepers will be filled by students, and each team will be judged on its presentation skills, not the legal merits of the case.
This year’s case is Sidney Curie v. Petzicon Products Inc. Curie owns an award-winning West Highland Terrier and is suing Petzicon for the manufacture and sale of its flea treatment FleaX after Curie’s dog died following its use. Petzicon says the accident was caused by Curie’s improper application of the flea treatment.
Twelve teams from four regional competitions - Coastal, Lowcountry, Midlands and Piedmont - will move on to the state competition, which is in its 10th year. The state contest will be held Dec. 6-7 at the Marc H. Westbrook Lexington County Judicial Center, Lexington.
The Mock Trial Program is sponsored by the S.C. Bar’s Law Related Education Division.
