The Coastal Carolina University football program, in only the second season under head coach Joe Moglia, is receiving some national attention, in a good way. The Chanticleers are 5-0 on the season and ranked sixth in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Coaches Poll. These are first-time events, being 5-0 and ranked that high.

And there is more to impress even casual followers, not to mention faithful fans. The Chants have scored at least 50 points in the last three games, all of which they won by at least 19 points. Including last year, they have wins in 11 of the last 12 games.

They are off this weekend and will play Gardner-Webb University Saturday in Brooks Stadium. In offense, CCU is eighth among all FCS teams with an impressive 507.6 yards per game. Those are big numbers at any level of college football. Scoring averages 43.2 points per game, which is fourth in the FCS. The defense has had inconsistency but is improving.

We were among the many admirers of former coach David Bennett, who began building the CCU football program in 2001, and his dismissal in December 2011 angererd many in the community. But Bennett has moved forward and so should all of those in Chanticleer country.

Congratulations to all involved in the team’s success thus far, Moglia and his assistants and especially the players.
