MYRTLE BEACH — For a team that has never beaten Myrtle Beach in football, Wilson sure put up a fight on Friday night.
But a fight didn’t equal the first victory for Wilson in the series.
Myrtle Beach scored 20 unanswered points to erase a 1-point deficit, en route to a 33-21 victory over Wilson in the Region VII-AAA opener for each team.
“It’s a good win. We were a little sloppy at times tonight,” Seahawks coach Mickey Wilson said. “But it’s the first region game and it was real important for us to come out and get a win. We’ll take it any way we can get it right now.”
Seahawks halfback Brandon Sinclair rushed for three touchdowns and quarterback Drayton Arnold passed for two for Myrtle Beach.
“Brandon ran hard,” Wilson said. “They really keyed on him, they did a good job. But he’s our guy now; he’s carrying the load and is doing a good job.”
Wilson scored the only points of the second half after T.J. Frederick completed a 10-yard pass to Kendrick Johnson to cut the Tigers’ deficit to 12 points with 11:58 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
“We’re getting better on the defensive side of the ball,” Wilson said. “We stepped up tonight on big third downs and making good plays. Just proud of those guys, we really played well on that side of the ball tonight.”
The Seahawks scored right out of the gate to gain some momentum. Malik Waring caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Arnold and Sinclair scored a 9-yard rushing touchdown as Myrtle Beach took a 13-0 advantage in the first quarter.
Wilson gained some momentum near the end of the first quarter. Frederick completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Raekwon McCall to cut the Tigers’ deficit to six. After Myrtle Beach’s Kelton Greene fumbled, Wilson’s Jerran Lesane picked the ball up and returned it 83 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 14-13 lead in the second quarter.
Sinclair scored a 5-yard rushing touchdown, his second of the night, in the second quarter to give the Seahawks a 19-14 lead. Greene redeemed the fumble he lost for a Wilson touchdown as he took a screen pass from Arnold 80 yards for a touchdown as Myrtle Beach went ahead 26-14. Sinclair scored his third touchdown of the first half with 2:51 left in the second quarter to give the Seahawks a commanding 33-14 lead.
“We just have to get more efficient offensively, defensively and on special teams. At times we weren’t efficient tonight and we have to change that.”
There couldn’t be a better time to execute as undefeated Socastee hosts Myrtle Beach on Friday.
“It’s going to be tough,” Wilson said. “They’re the region champs from last year. We have to go over there; it’s a tough place to play. We just have to get better.”
