— The owner of the popular Sam’s Corner restaurants in Garden City and Myrtle Beach, Sam Baker, died Friday. Baker of Murrells Inlet was 62.

Chris Drake, an employee at the Myrtle Beach location, said he was unsure of plans for the restaurants, but expected the business to stay open with Baker’s family members taking over management. He referred further questions to his manager, who was not available to speak with The Sun News on Sunday.

Baker opened the original Sam’s Corner in Garden City in 1976.

Baker died at the Medical University of South Carolina, according to an obituary from Goldfinch Funeral Home.

People can pay their respects to Baker’s family at Goldfinch Funeral Home Beach Chapel, 11528 Frontage Road, Murrells Inlet, from 6 to 6 p.m. Monday. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Garden City Chapel, 316 Dogwood Drive, Murrells Inlet.

The family has asked those who wish to send flowers to instead send donations to the Sam Baker USC Memorial Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 348, Murrells Inlet, S.C., 29576.
