Socastee cruises past Lake View, improves to 5-0

September 20, 2013

— Hunter Renfrow and the Socastee offense put together an impressive performance in the first half on Friday night.

And that was all the Braves would need.

Renfrow tossed three touchdown passes in the first half, Delano Walters rushed for two scores, and a dominant Socastee defense stifled Lake View for a 48-0 victory to improve to 5-0.

“I thought our kids played well and came out with the right mentality,” Braves coach Doug Illing said. “We played the football game the way its supposed to be played. We came out aggressive, played fast and played physical.”

As for the Socastee defense, Illing’s squad put some rumors to rest.

“People keep saying we don’t have defense; aren’t any good on defense,” he said. “The kids are using that as motivation. So that’s good.”

The Braves started out with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Renfrow to Maxwell Kjosa to put Socastee up 7-0. Delano Walters scampered for his first rushing touchdown of the game from 14 yards out as Socastee grabbed a 13-0 lead with 7:34 left in the first quarter. Renfrow tossed his second touchdown pass to Kjosa with 2:19 left in the first frame to give the Braves a 20-0 advantage.

“I thought he was right-on,” Illing said of Renfrow. “He had good reads and good execution. Our line blocked well and I thought he played well.”

Renfrow was replaced by junior Jordan Hodge at the quarterback position to start the second half.

“The game was in control and we don’t want to risk any injuries,” Illing said of replacing Renfrow in the second half. “We’ve been hit by the injury bug this week so we certainly didn’t want to get anyone else hurt. Definitely a precautionary move.”

Socastee continued its offensive attack in the second quarter as McKenzie Pickney caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Renfrow to give the Braves a 26-point advantage. Angelo Sauter rushed for a 2-yard touchdown and Walters rushed 17 yards for his second touchdown of the game as Socastee took a 41-0 lead at halftime.

Lake View had the ball inside the Socastee 10-yard line with under five minutes left to play in the fourth quarter, but the Braves stopped the Wild Gators just inside the 2-yard line for a turnover on downs to spoil Lake View’s only chance to get in the endzone.

The Braves, who are off next week, will take on a tough North Myrtle Beach squad on Oct. 4.

“I expect a good game,” Illing said. “They’ll probably be undefeated and we’ll be undefeated so it’ll be two good teams going head-to-head. They have a team playing with a lot of confidence so it’ll be a challenge for our kids.”
