No timeline is set for when a replacement might be named for Horry County Department of Airports Director Mike La Pier, and no explanation has been given for his abrupt termination.
In an email request sent Wednesday to Lisa Bourcier, spokeswoman for Horry County, The Sun News asked what the next step is in getting a replacement, when the county is slated to begin and what the county is looking for in a new director.
Bourcier responded: “No official timeline has been set to select an airport director at this time. The position will be hired by the county administrator.”
Chris Eldridge, county administrator, was the one who let La Pier go last Friday, on exactly the third anniversary of his hire date.
La Pier, like all department heads, did not have a contract and made $149,383.52 annually. A call to his personal cell phone Wednesday was not returned.
La Pier was chosen by former County Administrator John Weaver in 2010 and was selected among more than 80 candidates after a three-month search and interview process.
The county, then, recruited ADK Executive Search, who specializes in looking for personnel to fill airport management positions. As of Wednesday, Horry County was listed as a client of ADK’s on its website, but there was not an active ad for the director’s position.
