CONWAY — State troopers arrested two people Saturday after an attempted traffic stop turned into a chase and shootout, according to S.C. Highway Patrol spokesman Sonny Collins.
Police had not identified the suspects by Sunday but said both were captured – one near the scene, the other later after a search.
Collins said a trooper tried to stop the vehicle the suspects were in when it sped off and led officers in a chase with at least one person firing at police during the chase. The chase ended near S.C. 22 and S.C. 319 where the suspects jumped from their vehicle to flee. Collins said the suspect also fired at police as they fled on foot.
One of the suspects managed to escape into woods, but was captured after officers searched the area. Collins said both were in custody Sunday night, but he did not release their names and couldn’t be sure if charges had been filed.
He said the incident is being investigated by Horry County police, the highway patrol and the State Law Enforcement Division, which is investigating because the shooting involved a police officer.
