CAROLINA FOREST — After an 0-3 start, the Carolina Forest football team had its back against the wall Friday night.
However, not much has changed for the Panthers.
Carolina Forest allowed White Knoll wide receiver Calev Grubbs to catch three touchdowns and the Timberwolves defense did enough to hold off the Panthers 55-34.
On fourth down with eight yards to go and the ball on the nine yard line with 9 minutes left in the game, Will Brunson threw an incomplete pass to Khalil Brantley for a turnover on downs, giving all the momentum to White Knoll.
The Timberwolves put the game away in the fourth quarter after quarterback Craig Blakey rushed for a 5-yard touchdown with 4:46 left and EMond Brown scored a 15-yard rushing touchdown with about a minute left to give White Knoll a 21-point advantage.
The Panthers didnt have much tempo to start the second half, but that changed near the end of the third quarter. Brunson completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Belack to cut Carolina Forests deficit to two possessions with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.
On its first drive of the second half, White Knolls Quindarius Jones scored a 3-yard rushing touchdown to give the Timberwolves a 34-20 advantage in the third quarter. Grubbs extended White Knolls lead to 11 with about four minutes left in the third quarter after he caught an 82-yard touchdown reception from Blakey.
White Knolls offense looked good out of the gate. Wide receiver Calev Grubbs caught two passes for touchdowns in the first quarter and the Timberwolves ended the first frame with a 14-6 advantage.
In the second quarter, a few big plays really helped the Panthers. Sophomore Terik Graves intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown to put Carolina Forest within one score. Then, Will Brunson completed a 76-yard pass to Zavier Jones for a touchdown to tie the game at 20.
Jones scored a 6-yard rushing touchdown with 30 seconds left in the first half to give White Knoll a 27-20 lead before the half.
